A Mysterious DoorDash Order Has This Salem, Massachusetts Neighborhood Stumped: ‘I Need Help’
A woman in Salem, Massachusetts, was having a normal night at home until she got a delivery that left her completely baffled. Things got even more complicated when she noticed her neighbors got a similar delivery. Now, she’s looking for answers on social media.
In a video posted to TikTok by user @kritchenscissors, the woman shared a photo of a DoorDash delivery she received on her porch. However, she didn’t order DoorDash. To make matters worse, the order was huge and consisted of 19 pizzas, calzones, and 3 steak tip salads.
A Mysterious Massachusetts DoorDash Order Arrives for “Barry K.”
“I need help trying to figure out this mystery,” the social media user told her followers, revealing the massive amount of food that was delivered to her home. “We got someone’s very large DoorDash delivery delivered to our house. “The name on the receipt is Barry K. in Salem, Massachusetts.”
Meanwhile, her house wasn’t the only one that got a large delivery for Barry. The woman also revealed that her neighbors received a food delivery for the same man. Although their delivery wasn’t as large, it was still substantial.
“I look across the street at my neighbors. They also have someone’s very large food delivery. I’m like ‘What did this DoorDash delivery driver do?’ So we walk over there, and this food is also for Barry,” she continued.
No Answers, But a Good Deed
It looks like the woman was hoping to find some answers. Meanwhile, after being unable to get the food to Barry, the Massachusetts woman put the food to good use and donated it to a homeless shelter. In an update, she told her viewers that she had yet to figure out who Barry is, or why his food was delivered to her home.
She did reveal in another video that she had contacted DoorDash and on other social media platforms in hopes of figuring out what happened and possibly finding Barry K. “I’m not even sure Barry exists. I think, either Barry got scammed or Barry is the scammer,” she said.
Many on TikTok agreed, revealing that the order could have been part of a credit card scam. “Unfortunately, large orders are usually some kind of a credit card scam. They were probably testing a batch of stolen credit cards to see which ones worked and picked a random delivery address,” one person commented.
“I guess the only good thing it that the restaurants got paid. Would be horrible to have made an order that big and miss out on the customer paying for it,” said another. “Barry is now broke and hungry,” a third person joked.
Was This A DoorDash Scam?
Several commenters suspected Barry’s mystery order might be the result of stolen payment information, and they may be onto something. According to Ridester, a rideshare and delivery industry outlet, scammers sometimes use stolen credit card details to place large fraudulent orders on apps like DoorDash, since the fraudulent charges can go unnoticed by the cardholder until it’s too late. Some scammers place unusually large orders specifically to maximize what they can get out of a stolen card before it’s flagged or shut down.
DoorDash itself has dealt with major security issues in the past. The company confirmed a data breach affecting customer names, addresses, and partial card information in past years, which fraud experts say has fueled a steady stream of scams using compromised accounts and payment details, per CBS News.
Whether Barry K. was the victim of stolen card information or something else entirely, the Massachusetts mystery so far remains unsolved.
