A man in New Jersey was lounging by the swimming pool when he caught sight of a mother having a very bad day. The video, which went viral on social media, shows a mother whose children are refusing to obey her orders. So, she is forced to go to extremes, and left many on the internet reminiscing about their own mothers.
In a TikTok video posted by user @jackvontrap, a man is seen relaxing by a swimming pool in Jersey City as he records a mother trying to get her son out of the pool. However, the boy decides not to listen to his mother and continues to splash around playfully. After trying to get her son out of the water using her words, it was clear that it wasn’t going to work.
So, the mom decides that she has to climb into the pool herself. Wearing a burgundy dress, she ties up her hair and walks into the water with her clothes on. She tries to grab her son’s arm, but he swims away. Finally, while yelling at him to get out, she catches him. However, things get worse from there.

The boy decides to be even more defiant, as he pulls his arm away and begins to use profanity toward his mother. “You do not talk to me like that,” she says to him as they climb out of the pool. The New Jersey man and a friend can be heard talking about the incident, stunned by the boy’s behavior.
Netizens were also appalled by the boy’s disrespect for his mother. “if my mom would have had to enter the water, that would be my last breathing moment on this planet,” one person wrote. “Honestly, I think she’s under-reacting,” said another. “Poor woman worked all year to pay for a holiday and her kids disrespect her,” a third comment read. “This enrages me,” a fourth person weighed in.

While the boy’s behavior left many viewers stunned, child psychologists say defiance and meltdowns directed at parents even in public are more normal than they might seem. According to Psychology Today, children tend to be on their best behavior around strangers and more restrained adults because they feel most secure with the people closest to them, meaning parents often see their kids’ most unfiltered emotions, while others see a calmer, more polished version.
Psychologists trace this pattern back to attachment research, where a child’s willingness to show big emotions around a parent is generally seen as a sign of a secure bond, not a parenting failure. In other words, a child melting down for mom while behaving for a babysitter or teacher isn’t necessarily a red flag; it’s often the opposite.
That said, experts note there’s a difference between a child expressing big feelings and using disrespectful language, which is where many commenters online drew the line.
