Tennessee Woman Brings Boyfriend Home For A Visit But His Reaction To The Sounds Leaves Him ‘Tripping Out’
A woman in Tennessee brought her boyfriend, who hails from California, to her hometown of Memphis for a visit. However, she quickly got a laugh when he discovered the sounds of the South in the summer.
In a TikTok video posted by user @elizabethholdthequeen, the woman’s boyfriend is seen getting out of their car when they arrive for their visit. He instantly looks confused.
“Am I the only one that’s tripping out?” he asks her. “What are you asking me?” the Tennessee native says, laughing. “What’s the sound?” he asks. In the background, it’s easy to hear the loud sound of cicadas making their humming noises.
“What sound?” she asks, teasing him. “What do you mean? You don’t hear it?” he shoots back, seemingly a bit frustrated. Meanwhile, the girlfriend can’t contain her amusement and begins to laugh as she watches her boyfriend scan the area, looking for an answer to his question.
California Boyfriend Confused by Tennessee Summer Sounds
Finally, she explains to him that the sound he’s hearing is cicadas, and is amazed that he’s never heard them before. “We don’t have that back home,” he tells her.
Her viewers, who know all too well that the cicadas are just part of the normal summer sounds in certain areas, also got a laugh out of the situation.
“Tell him [it’s] tree rattlesnakes,” one person joked. “The song of the South,” said another. “When you hear them u know it’s hot,” a third person chimed in. “The trees scream when it gets too hot. You’ll get used to it,” a fourth comment read.
Meanwhile, others were stunned by the noise, claiming that they’d never heard of cicadas or knew that the noise even existed. “Are those your crickets?? I’m terrified,” one person commented.
What Are Cicadas?
According to XERCES.org, cicadas are known for being loud bugs that can be heard in the summertime. The insects are sometimes called locusts because they show up in huge groups. However, locusts and cicadas are not the same thing. Cicadas emerge from the ground when the air gets warm. They climb trees and molt into adults with wings.
The insects only live for around a month before reproducing and dying. At the end of summer, their eggs hatch and the babies burrow into the ground. They stay in the trees because they drink the sap and pose no immediate threats to humans, pets, or plants. However, they are one of the noisiest parts of summers across much of the country.
As for the Tennessee woman’s boyfriend, he may not have grown up with cicadas, but after this trip, he definitely won’t forget them.
