‘Kind of Threw Me’: California Man Stops at Dollar General for a Sweet Treat, Then Notices Major Changes
A Los Angeles, California, man couldn’t believe his eyes when he stopped in a local Dollar General store to grab a quick snack. Times are tough all over, but what he saw inside the store was something he said he had never seen before, at least to this extent.
Looking for a little clarification, he shared his Dollar General experience on TikTok, and it sparked quite a debate over the strange and sad changes that many in the United States are experiencing. Content creator @chaiglover‘s video hit many of his followers with a sad and scary dose of reality, leaving them to question the state of our economy.
California Dollar General Adds Anti-Theft Tags To Candy
The TikTok clip shows @chaiglover walking inside the Dollar General store. When he reaches the candy aisle, he can’t believe what he is seeing. Multiple bags of various candies in the shareable Ziploc in the “3- to 15- ounce” sizes all carrying anti-theft tags. “Ain’t no way. Say it ain’t so,” he says.
His video clip reveals his shock and disappointment, leaving him to add, “There’s no way people are stealing candies at such a rapid rate.” It also led his followers to question the real reason behind all the changes, with numerous stores putting anti-theft tags and other products behind serious glass lockdown cases. “This kind of threw me,” he captions his post.
“The security piece cost more than the candy,” one commenter points out.
“That’s cause them bags went from 3 to 12 dollars in 4 years,” another adds.
“The real crime is the jacked-up price,” another commenter agrees.
“At this rate, no one will be able to afford candy for the kids on Halloween,” one more speculates.
Americans’ Basic Needs Getting Further Out Of Reach
The TikTok also sparked a broader conversation about inflation, household budgets, and the growing use of anti-theft measures in retail stores. Some Americans claim that with the constantly changing economy, they are having extreme difficulties making ends meet. As rental and mortgage prices continue to rise, it is becoming a struggle for many to keep a roof over their heads. Add in the rising price of utilities and groceries, and many feel they just can’t keep up.
CBS News reports indicate that retailers these days are not only being forced to lock up high-ticket items, but also the most basic essentials. Some of these items include hygiene needs such as toothpaste, deodorant, and shampoo. Grocery store items include meat, baby formula, cereal, and milk.
Consumers Take Drastic Measures
A new study conducted by TheLendingTree.com reveals some dire facts. They claim that 30% of Americans admit to having shoplifted. 90% of those cite inflation and growing economic concerns are behind the decision. The American Psychiatric Association‘s 2026 mental health poll reports that 71% of U.S. adults are actively anxious about the economy and inflation.
They also claim that it is taking a major toll on their health and forcing many to actively cut back on prescribed medications, skip preventive screenings, and delay critical doctor’s appointments to save money and manage their shrinking budgets. For the California man, seeing anti-theft tags on everyday candy was enough to stop him in his tracks. This quickly sparked a much larger conversation online about prices, theft, and the changing retail experience.
